Transoral parathyroid surgery
In primary hyperparathyroidism, one or more of the four small parathyroid glands makes too much hormone, which raises blood calcium. Removing the overactive gland usually cures it. Transoral endoscopic parathyroidectomy, vestibular approach (TOEPVA) removes that gland through the same openings inside the lip.
Who it fits
TOEPVA works best when imaging, such as an ultrasound, sestamibi scan or 4D CT, has pinpointed a single overactive gland before surgery.
