What recovery looks like
Day of surgery
Most patients go home the same day. Staying overnight for observation is an option if you prefer. Your chin and lower lip will feel tight and swollen. You can drink and eat soft food.
Days 1 to 3
Swelling of the chin and upper neck peaks. Rinse your mouth after meals as instructed.
First week
Swelling eases. The openings inside the lip are not visible when you talk or smile.
Weeks 2 to 6
Remaining firmness under the chin softens over weeks to months.
After thyroid removal
You may need thyroid hormone medicine, and your calcium will be checked.
When to call your surgeon
fever, increasing swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, tingling around the mouth or in the fingers.
